Advisory Board

FIREFLY is advised by a group of esteemed researchers.

Dr. Anthony Steed is a Professor in the Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics group in the Department of Computer Science, University College London, UK. He is currently the head of the group. His research area is real-time interactive virtual environments, with a particular interest in virtual reality, augmented reality, novel forms of interaction, large-scale graphical models, collaborative systems, and networking for tightly synchronous telecollaboration. Details of his active projects can be found here. The group runs a CAVE-like facility, a large tracking space, and several other high-end virtual reality systems.

Prof. Marientina Gotsis is a Professor of Cinematic Practice at the University of Southern California, USA, and Visiting Professor at the Laboratory of Primary Health Care, General Practice & Health Services of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine. She has a broad background in arts, design, and engineering, with a special interest in interactive entertainment applications for health, happiness, rehabilitation and 15 years of expertise in using games and virtual reality as educational or therapeutic interventions. She is co-founder and director of the Creative Media & Behavioral Health Center (CMBHC), an organized research unit between the School of Cinematic Arts and the Keck School of Medicine.

Dr. George Lepouras is a Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Peloponnese, and Vice-Rector for Finance, Planning, and Development at the same institution. Dr Lepouras is a senior member of ACM and has served as the chairman of the Greek ACM SIGCHI. His research interests include game-based profiling, personal and task information management, multilingual interfaces, web-based interfaces, virtual reality and augmented reality applications, as well as cultural technologies. He has participated as a researcher, technical manager, or team coordinator in many national and European research and technological development projects.

Alan John Dix is a British author, researcher, and university professor, specialising in human–computer interaction (HCI). He is the Director of the Computational Foundry at Swansea University and also Professorial Fellow at Cardiff Metropolitan University. In 2013 he was elected as a member of the ACM SIGCHI Academy, one of the highest accolades for research in HCI. He has also been involved in a wide variety of practical commercial and non-commercial applications. His techniques are often eclectic, not least his one thousand mile walk around the perimeter of Wales that combined a technical investigation of technology at the margins, with more philosophical and artistic exploration. He has also written and taught academically and practically about technical creativity.

Dr. Spyros Vosinakis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering, University of the Aegean, Greece, with the subject ‘Virtual Reality’. His research interests include interactive 3D environments, virtual and augmented reality, serious games, educational technology, and digital heritage. He has published one book and over 100 scientific papers in journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters. He has participated as a researcher in 16 funded R&D projects (seven as a scientific coordinator), and he has over 20 years of experience as a lead developer of interactive systems and 3D applications for companies and research projects. Since 2019 he is the head of the Interactive Systems Design Laboratory of the University of the Aegean.

Dr. George Karydakis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Cultural Technology & Communication, University of the Aegean, where he coordinates the Intelligent Interaction research group active in the research fields of Intelligent Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, and Digital Management of Cultural Heritage. He is also affiliated as a research professor with the Athena RC and the Artificial Intelligence and Learning Systems Laboratory (AILS) at the National Technical University of Athens. He has been appointed as an expert at the CEDCHE (Commission Expert Group on the Common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage), Chair of the Tourism, Culture and Creative Industries Sectoral Scientific Council (SSC), National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation (NCRTI) and elected as Chair of the (Greek ACM SIGCHI).

Dr. Agiatis Benardou is a Senior Research Associate at the Digital Curation Unit, Information Management Systems Institute (IMSI) of “Athena” Research Center, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Informatics, Athens University of Economics and Business. She has been appointed by the General Assembly as Director for the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities, DARIAH.
